This week’s #MarketVine is from FRESHFARM Crystal City, with one of our favorite vendors: Kuhn Orchards of Adams County, Pennsylvania. The fourth generation family farm grows some of the best stone fruits and berries around, including rare berries like gooseberries and currants. And their berry sampler cups are the best-ever “fast food” snack for hungry foodie tots while roaming the market.

Getting Social at the Farmers Market

Summer’s here and farmers markets are open all across the country — even in Minnesota, I hear.* I’ve written before about how fabulous farmers markets are for kids — my son will eat anything a farmer offers him to sample, especially if it comes on a toothpick. Earlier this week we went to the Crystal City FreshFarm Market (Tuesdays, 3-7pm) after school, and after sampling our way from end to end stopped to get frozen yogurt from the Sweetgreen truck. One of the boy’s teachers spotted us in line and called him out for having dessert before dinner, to which he replied, “Actually, I already ate dinner at the market!” (He had quite a balanced meal, really — beef jerky, cheeses (though he declared the ashed-goat log was “weird”), breads, lots of cherries, berries and apple slices, and apple cider.)

* Our dear friends moved to Minnesota several years ago. The boy has it in his head that Minnesota is practically at the North Pole, so he’s always talking about how they have “snow that never melts” there. In fact, just yesterday I heard the following in the car: “When you made me be born, you didn’t just have a normal human baby, you had me with T-Rex vision! I can see all the way to the North Pole! And even Minnesota!”

Opening Weekend at DC/VA/MD Farmers Markets

I’ve been spoiled to live by year-round markets, but my heart still skips a beat at the first spotting of bright green stalks of asparagus after a long, cold winter. This past weekend I lucked out and found the season’s first Northern Neck strawberries, too — much to the Foodie Tot’s joy. (Yes, he did a dance after peering into my market bag.)

But May brings the opening of many of the area’s seasonal markets — including Fairfax County markets, the Alexandria West End market (Sundays, 9am-1pm — **note, opening has been delayed until next Sunday, May 8), the FreshFarm Crystal City market (Tuesdays, 3-7m), and others. happy strawberry danceThe FreshFarm Market by the White House opens next Thursday (3-7pm), and one of my favorites, West Virginia’s Bigg Riggs Farm, is joining the market this year. (You can also find them at Crystal City and Alexandria’s Old Town and Upper King Street Markets — and they’ve had ramps the past couple weeks.)

If you’re headed out in search of asparagus this weekend, Northern Virginia magazine offers some pointers on how to choose and prepare them. Me, I roast them in olive oil and sea salt for about 8-10 minutes (400 degrees), until just tender enough for the baby to gnaw on.

That’s right, the Foodie Bebe has already savored her first asparagus. The boy’s fancy for it comes and goes. (Though I did discover he likes it better if I pan roast it in the cast iron skillet with butter instead of olive oil, and a little parmesan cheese never hurts.) Do your kids like it?

Local Potluck Tuesday (and Fried Baby Artichokes)

I learned to love artichokes during college in California, where a big, steamed choke and bowl of melted butter with wine (for dipping) was one of my favorite meals. The array of drop dead gorgeous artichokes at the Portland Farmers Market two summers ago was one of the things that had me nearly begging my husband to move back west. So it’s safe to assume there may have been a tear or two of joy when I spotted these baby artichokes at Kuhn Orchard’s stand at the Crystal City Farmers Market.

I trimmed the prickly tops, peeled the stems, sliced them and fried them up, per a recipe found at Steamy Kitchen. I first fried slivered garlic to season the oil, a la the Pioneer Woman. After removing the chokes from the frying pan, I tossed them with sea salt, a generous dose of grated parmesan cheese and the fried garlic. They were fabulous and I probably chowed down on half the plate before they made it to the table. (That’s okay, they taste best hot anyway.)

If you’re lucky enough to find baby artichokes grown near you, this is the perfect appetizer for your next dinner party. Or just for Tuesday night.
