Away from Home, originally uploaded by foodietots.

Can you guess from this market photo where we went on vacation?

No, not Central America. Florida. No luck finding a native avocado,
but we did enjoy lots of fresh citrus, even grapefruit picked
ourselves. Yum!

Stay tuned for the next installment of our Sustainable Family Supper
series (dairy is up next) just as soon as I recuperate from traveling
with two toddlers… (the boy’s 3yo cousin joined us.)

Can’t guess… but where I live avocados are $2.5 each!

Very interesting that country of origin is indicated for all of those produce – especially for what looks like a mom-and-pop type of operation.

I can’t believe that Asparagus is $1.00 cheaper here in Hawaii and it also comes from Peru.

@ Nurit – Wow, they’re not that expensive here, even though the California avocadoes in our stores travel much further to reach VA than to you.

@ Sylvie – You know, I wonder if the new country-of-origin laws apply to farmers markets? This was *not* an authentic farmstand by any means, they were reselling bagged lettuce greens. Will post more about that soon.

@ Holly – Funny, considering how much further it travels! I actually bought some local asparagus there from an organic farmer, which did cost more.

it’s funny you say, central america. cause you’re right we have the best fruits and veggies here and they are dirt cheap. problem is, i have yet to find organic stuff. there is some, but its so minimal that i dont’ even consider it a choice.
